I would advise the US Troops to conduct themselves appropriately. There exist elements that may seek to exploit a potential military incident involving the US to undermine the positive strides in the Philippines-US relations. The people of the Philippines are known for their warm hospitality, and while they are welcoming, they are astute and should not be underestimated or disregarded. It is important to acknowledge the martial prowess of the Filipino people and approach interactions with respect and understanding. 


Rules of Engagement




This event is at least an oddity in human behavior. Still, it raises many questions that many would instead not ask.

The Straits Times reported on 3 June 2024 at 06:21 PM (18:21) from Manila that the Chinese Coast Guard seized and dumped supplies destined for the Filipino Troops on the remote outpost in the Second Thomas Shoal. The story also mentions that the Chinese Coast Guard prevented an 'ailing soldier' from being medevaced out. This soldier, whose condition was not disclosed, was in need of urgent medical attention. According to an 'unnamed ranking navy officer,' the incident occurred on 19 May 2024. The Manila Times's Franco C Barona repeated the same story on 4 June 2024. 

A post on X on 4 June 2024 at 10:51 AM by Martin Sadongdong (@MB_mrtnsdngdng) reports that AFP General Romeo Brower Jr. confirmed the report that the Chinese Coast Guard is engaged in what could be called piracy on the high seas. 

The AFP captures the confrontation between the Chinese Coast Guard and the AFP Zodiacs in a video released by GMA Integrated News, a reputable news source, and others. 

Here is where the question comes in:
  • The Second Thomas Shoal is in the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone.
  • The Chinese Coast Guard has no legal right to be in the Philippines Economic Zone. 
  • Using their gray tactics (high-pressure water cannons), the Chinese prevented supplies from reaching the BRP Sierra Madre. 
  • The AFP, displaying remarkable courage, airdropped the supplies to resupply the troops on the BRP Sierra Madre despite the Chinese Coast Guard's blockade (a blockade of a military outpost by a foreign power is considered an act of war by most countries).
  • The supplies were not abandoned salvage on the high seas.
  • The AFP had small boats in the water. 
  • The AFP was close enough to video the confrontation.

What are the AFP's rules of engagement regarding protecting its logistical supply lines and the medical well-being of the forces stationed on the BRP Sierra Madre?

That is the question that Ferdinand 'Bongbong' R. Marcos Jr., President of The Philippines, must address to the satisfaction of the Filipino Fisherfolk and citizens. A beacon of hope in these challenging times, the President's actions will speak louder than any appeasement attempts towards the Chinese Communist Government.
