Special Edition: Bashi Channel Guard

The northernmost island of the Philippines is Y'Ami Island, also known as Y'Ami or Mavulis Island. It is located in the Luzon Strait, north of Batanes islands. The Bashi Channel lies between Y'Ami Island and Taiwan.

The Bashi Channel is indeed a critical maritime route for Chinese merchant shipping, as it is a key passage for ships traveling between the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea. The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) could potentially use this route for various purposes, including cutting off eastern Taiwan from potential allied support or for strategic military movements in the region.

The geopolitical significance of the Bashi Channel and the surrounding areas has been a subject of interest and concern due to the complex maritime disputes and military activities in the South China Sea and the broader Indo-Pacific region. It is important for countries in the region to manage these tensions and conflicts through diplomacy and international law to ensure peace and stability in the region.

In April 2024, the United States provided the Philippines with Medium Range Surface to Surface Missiles for drill purposes, allowing the country to enhance its defense capabilities through training and preparedness. In the event of a potential invasion of Taiwan, the Philippines stands ready to utilize these missile batteries in exercises to deter aggression and strengthen its defensive posture. A strategic partnership involving Japan, Australia, and potentially Vietnam and India could swiftly come to the aid of the Philippines in such a scenario, forming a trilateral force to bolster regional security. This cooperative defense arrangement underscores the importance of alliances and partnerships in promoting peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. It is essential for countries to prioritize diplomacy, adherence to international law, and peaceful conflict resolution to ensure the maintenance of peace in the region amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics.

As of the current writing, the Philippines has mutual aid agreements in place with the United States, Japan, and Australia, strengthening regional security cooperation. Additionally, French interests have been piqued regarding respect for the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Recently, Canada and the Philippines have signed an agreement, further solidifying bilateral ties and cooperation. The European Union (EU) is increasingly expressing concerns over China's assertive use of gray tactics to obstruct Filipino fisherfolk from accessing resources in the Scarborough Shoal. China, along with its supporters at Al Jazeera, is deflecting blame onto the United States for the challenges faced by the fisherfolk, while also accusing the Philippines of provoking China's actions. It is important to note that China's presence in the Philippine EEZ is considered illegal by international standards, raising tensions in the region and prompting calls for adherence to maritime laws and norms.

In the event of a regional conflict, there is little doubt that the Philippines' capabilities will be put to the test, but history suggests that they have the potential to prevail against Chinese forces. Chinese military forces have limited combat experience, as demonstrated by their unsuccessful attempts in the past. In 1979, when China attempted to seize territories in Vietnam, they were met with strong resistance and ultimately repelled. Similarly, in 2021, China's encroachment into Indian territory resulted in a similar outcome, with Indian forces successfully defending their borders. These historical instances underscore the resilience and determination of nations defending their sovereignty against Chinese aggression, suggesting that the Philippines could stand firm and defend its interests in the face of a regional conflict.

The warning from Poland regarding Russia's potential intentions to carry out a land grab under the guise of rebuilding the Russian empire is indeed concerning, especially if the targeted lands are within NATO nations. Any such aggressive actions by Russia could potentially trigger the Mutual Aid Pact within NATO, leading to broader regional tensions and escalations.

Moreover, the suggestion that China might seize the opportunity presented by a potential conflict in Europe to make moves in the South China Sea adds another layer of complexity to the situation. If China were to exploit a distracted NATO response to further its territorial ambitions in the South China Sea, it could potentially lead to heightened regional tensions and the risk of a wider global conflict.

Such a scenario underscores the interconnectedness of global geopolitics and the potential for a chain reaction of events that could escalate into a large-scale conflict. It highlights the importance of diplomacy, de-escalation efforts, and international cooperation in preventing the outbreak of conflicts and maintaining peace and stability on a global scale. Vigilance, cooperation, and adherence to international norms and agreements are essential in navigating such complex and potentially volatile situations.

In my book "Wealth Women and War," I accurately predicted the economic collapse of 2008, showcasing the value of historical insights in understanding current and future events. Available through Lulu Press, the book provides a unique perspective on economic forecasting and global trends.

Turning to the present, the escalating tensions between the Philippines and China over territorial disputes in various Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) present a cause for concern. While diplomacy is typically a key tool in resolving such conflicts, China's assertive actions challenge the effectiveness of traditional diplomatic channels.

The complex dynamics in the region underscore the importance of upholding international norms, a rules-based order, and fostering multilateral cooperation to address challenges posed by aggressive actions. Despite the hurdles in diplomatic efforts, continued engagement and dialogue are vital in managing conflicts and promoting stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

As we navigate these uncertain times, it is crucial for all stakeholders to remain vigilant, explore diplomatic solutions, and work towards peaceful resolutions to prevent further escalation. By upholding these principles and fostering collaborative approaches, we can strive to maintain peace, security, and stability in the region.
